    Are HOA's little socialist communities?

They are so corrupt with no oversight or recourse whatsoever.

Why people enjoy being told how to live is beyond me.

By definition I would call HOAs Fascism or Maybe an Oligharcy if the wealthiest in the neighborhood tend to fill the most powerful positions..

First of all, I don't live in an HOA community. However I know some people that do
It's not so much being told how to live. It's more about not having neighbors or a neighborhood living recklessly, doing what ever the hell they want to...tough call sometimes. Total freedom to live how one wants to can be rather frustrating as a neighbor. I think HOA's kind of prevent that...

We have a HOA. Couple hundred a year. They do nothing. Wish they would enforce a little better. We are in a fire zone. Empty lots with stuff ready to burn.

I think a lot of people buy into on the promise that it protects the value of their investment. Too often it seems to be a breeding ground for tyrants and corruption. I was reading a story a couple of weeks ago about a woman who got served with an eviction notice by the sheriff because the HOA was seizing her home over alleged violations and unpaid fines. No one had so much as knocked on her door to tell her about the violations and they had no proof that she had ever been notified in any way. Protected her azz right out onto the street. The worst is when they take legal action against someone in the hospital or serving a tour of duty overseas

That link I posted, the community got the required signatures to recall the HOA board and the HOA board basically just said "no". And there was nothing they could do.

I got 2 HOAs. Really have had no issues with either, I don't agree with some of there decisions. But if I lived next to someone not taking care of the property, and multiple families living there. I'm glad I have one. Cause that would hurt the adjoining properties resale.

I think alot of people are like me and don't like being told to keep up on there property maintenance. So we have anger towards them.

I mean they can't do much nowaday's, other than harass and bill you. In fact many HOAs money goes to lawyer fees, for defending against other's attacking them and sue-ing the HOA itself. Seen this many times.

I live in a neighborhood with a very active and predominantly fair HOA. The family that developed the neighborhood 50 years ago is still involved.

Our HOA has decidedly protected our property values. There are more than a few $800,000.00+ homes in our neighborhood. Within one mile of our neighborhood there is a family living in a tar paper shack and within five miles there are two different families living in school buses.

I’ve heard horror stories of some HOA’s but our experience has been very fair and we’ve been here 25 years.

For every example of people abusing HOA power, there are a thousand examples of them preventing neighbors from having Cousin Eddie park in the side yard in his old RV or leaving junk cars in the driveway. As much as people complain, nobody wants to live next to an eyesore that destroys their property value. Just another excuse for people to be indignant about a situation that doesn’t affect them. Like anything else in the world, if you don’t want an HOA telling you what to do, don’t buy a house in a development with an HOA. People just enjoy complaining.

    Yes.
No one can be wrong that often so it has to be deliberate.

While I know some HOA’s are a pain a lot are not and the problem a lot of the time is the homeowners, not the HOA. I am the president of our HOA and the crap we have to deal with is ridiculous. I knew nothing about HOA’s about three years ago, had never even been to an HOA meeting. All I can say is homeowners can be a pain in the butt. Trailers constantly in their driveway, weeds knee high, running daycare’s out of their home, operating a martial arts business, you name it we are dealing with it. It’s neighbors complaining about their neighbor 90% of the time, not the HOA going out looking for issues.

This year over 50 out of 330 homeowners haven’t paid their dues if that tells you anything. I’ve seen around 5 out of 330 the last few years. Getting on the HOA board is probably one of the dumbest things I’ve done but someone has to do it I guess. There’s many things I do hate about them but they can be decent if properly managed. We are pretty relaxed and try not to be a pain but we deal with some unbelievable homeowners. There’s not that many but the ones that are trouble are constant trouble. Saying that it’s a very small percentage, like maybe 5 or less out of 330 in our neighborhood that are a major pain. The rest we never hear a word and and cause zero issues.
