What kind of terminal connectors would you use. Can you provide a link?

No cheap ones, good connectors are not cheap, I have hundreds of various connecters, shrink insulated and non insulated seamless, I lean to Non insulted for most work as you can achieve a better crimp with the right tools and use quality sealing shrink tube to insulate. Just for informational purposes I have many different crimping systems including hydraulic which is a must have with 8 gauge or larger, neighborhood of 1500 bucks for just the crimpers and at least a 2000 bucks in various connectors. Then there is the wire, cable, cable lugs and shrink tubing
    Thank You Leon Pugh

Most people probably do not have the correct crimping tool for 8 gauge wire to do it correctly as you mentioned. I’m pretty sure the sea clear harness is 8 gauge and I know it’s pricey, but after you get a special crimping tool wouldn’t it be cheaper just to use the prebuilt harness? I agree that you could do it cheaper but if you need a special tool to PROPERLY crimp heavier gauge wire, now it seems a prebuilt is cheaper.

You don’t need a 1500 dollar hydraulic crimper to make a high quality crimp. The FTZ Correct Crimp (FTZ-94284) combined with FTZ Power Lugs will do just that. It's not cheap but it's a great crimper for larger cables.

Same!! Did my own. Came out fantastic
i use the Burndy Y122CMR HYTOOL hand crimper for non insulated connectors up to #2 wire. Anything larger than that.. up to 750 mcm I use a Burndy pat750 12 ton press.

There very good hydraulic crimpers out there for under 200 bucks, harbor freight has a good one for about 100.00
    Thank You Leon Pugh

I do and have done crimping. Unless you plan to use a tool for more than one project it makes little sense to pay enough to do it yourself rather than find someone with the know how and proper tools to do it for you for less. My tools are for #10 and smaller wire and connectors. That will cost over $100 but smaller wire is used almost all the time compared to the larger sizes.

Not near as good as a hydraulic crimper and difficult to get into tight spots. Crimps are marginal at best

I disagree. Makes perfect crimps. Highly recommended.

The marinehowto.com website is a great resource for anyone that wants to learn more about this from a ABYC Certified Marine Electrical Systems Specialist.

The link I posted above is just one many helpful articles available on their site. That particular article discusses how to make battery cables. It is well written and includes lots of photos. In it, he recommends quality tools like the FTZ Correct Crimp and shows how to use them. He also warns the reader to avoid poorly made cheap hydraulic crimpers like the ones sold by Harbor Freight. Scroll to the bottom of that article for an in depth review. It is right on the money.

Check out his other write-ups including a great primer on marine wire termination.

Many will find it preferable to just buy a quality pre-built harness like the Sea Clear or have a skilled professional do the work for them but if you have the desire to make your own but need some guidance on how to do it right, please check out the marinehowto.com website.

As an electrician in my day job I'd never pay them for that. I bought all the material and did mine and buddies boat for less than the cost of 1 of their harnesses.

I like the concept BUT you can make your own and it will be better quality. The connectors are cheap, easily come apart and as mentioned, they are not the greatest to pull through tight areas. This also lends to pulling them with more force which can separate the already crappy connections.

Can someone walk me through how to make one of these for my 106sv and live scope? Those are the only units that will be connected to their own battery.
