    Odd Black Box

I was tinkering yesterday with my new to me boat. It has an ultrex and I was organizing the wires up front and noticed there is a good size rectangular black box that is spliced into the trolling motor battery wires. It was tie wrapped under the depth finder bracket that bridges over the recessed pedal tray. It looks sealed (I couldnt find a way in it) and approximately 2.5" wide and 4" long. 2 wires go in and 2 wires go out with splices on each side so it was installed for a purpose. I have never seen anything like it. Anybody know? I will take a picture this afternoon if necessary. I am guessing some kind of surge protector or something. Boat has a circuit breaker at the TM battery.

My GUESS is a ferrite ring to reduce interference.

I do not know why a choke was added to the power wire, because the Ultrex already has a choke on the motor wires. I guess he must have had a real issue.

That is standard issue for several HB/Minn Kota products for use if your House/cranking battery is hooked to the Minn Kota charger with TM batteries also hooked to it. IF you have interference issues. Bob

And the HB is a DI unit not SI. Interesting though. I’ve never seen or heard of that before.

No it is not the battery charger choke cable--read the description in the link.
That device was available 10+ years ago as a remedy for RFI on Side Imaging. I used one when I had a Motor Guide Tour and could not get rid of RFI. It was one of the many things I tried before I got that issue resolved.
When I changed to an Ultrex, I did not re-install it, did not have RFI so it wasn't needed.

The current battery charger choke is due to the MEGA Imaging frequency.

10/4. Had one hooked on a Terrova. I think on an 1197. My first interference bout! I choked! A choke is not always the same. Bob
It is all coming back now, The final fix turned out to be ferrite with 6 wraps on the transducer wire at the back of the 1197. Left that big thing screwed down in front of the TM anyway.

That was a good choke. And if i may ad, leave it installed.
I had it on my TM and if it was still available, I would put another on it. Another excellent item no longer made. I had it installed on a MG TM.
