Lately, my tach will show 2000+ RPMs at an idle and go up from there. It's not every time. I checked the wires on the back of the gauge for tightness.

What brand of tachometer? I see the boat is a Vexus and it is doubtful it is an Evinrude supplied gauge.
Regardless, I suspect a failed tachometer and in need of replacement. Might be covered by warranty.
Most boat supplied TACH are crap. I had mine replaced twice and have given up on it. Now I have a Lowrance Interface Cable from the outboard motor to my NMEA 2000 backbone and read the TACH on my Lowrance GPS/FF. Also many other info supplied to my GPS/FF and now since I added a Lowrance FDM I can read how much fuel I used and EXACTLY how much fuel is left in my tank. See links below.....

Yes as long as you connect the Evinrude engine into to N2K network. You can buy an Evinrude interface cable thru Lowrance or Evinrude
Present gauge a system check? Or is it an I-command gauge?
