    ATF Dexron IV

    Another naive question...

I've seen debates supporting and disregarding ATF for trim and tilt.

I have the Yamaha HPDI service manual for VZ250 which actually RECOMMENDS ATF Dexron II, which I understand isn't manufactured any longer.

Is there any reason not to use ATF Dexron IV? or VI (whichever it is)?

    Thanks in advance

While trouble shooting my SHO trim issue, I used dextron to top off reservoir, no problems to date. I replaced my trim motor, never changed the fluid and all is good couple months later.

I’m not saying you can’t use dexron vi but it’s not the same as dex ii was. Dex vi is semi or full synthetic. Dex iii you can still get and that’s a conventional. At the shop we have some atf that is “universal” for a lot of vehicles, mostly ones that use conventional. We have a cross reference sheet and dex vi isn’t a match for ours. So again not saying you can’t use it, but if it calls for ii, might want to use iii as it’s the closest match.

When it comes to use in transmissions, all versions of Dexron are backwards compatible with all previous versions. Not sure how that may apply to non-transmission use.
