I store my boat outside for the winter. Actually it is outside all year. But late Nov - March it sits unused. Always put peppermint oil liberally sprinkled on the carpet, and in closed compartments. I'll reach under the cover a couple of times throughout the winter and put a little bit more to replenish it. I do that the same time I'm plugging in the battery charger.
I don't know if that is what keeps mice or other rodents away. But so far they stay away. So I'll keep doing it.
As far as opening the boat in the spring, I've never had an issue with it being overly minty.
