RIGHT PROP FOR 2023 MERCURY PRO XS 4STROKE

RIGHT PROP FOR 2023 MERCURY PRO XS 4STROKE

Well, I blew up my 2000 Mercury Optimax 225 (crack in crank case). I blew up the rebuilt 2006 Mercury Pro XS 250 (#4 connecting rod thru block). So, I'm repowering with a brand new 2023 Mercury Pro XS 250 Four Stroke. I'm having a hard time deciding what prop to run. I'm leaning towards a 4 blade Mercury Bravo I FS Pro 24 pitch. My original Opti 225 ran a Trophy Plus 25 pitch 4 blade and I could run 76 mph at 5600 rpm with partner. I still have that prop and it's in excellent shape. No dings. Been worked a few times. Most info I have received has been about a Fury 3 blade in 23 pitch for this motor, no data. The 2006 Pro XS 250 never ran like I thought it should, so I don't have accurate data on that motor with my prop. The only data I have on that engine with my prop was 66 mph at 5500 rpm. I do carry 20 rods and to much tackle. 45 gallon tank, and I think the boat weighs 1440 lbs. Partner and myself average 500 lbs. The new engine I think weighs in at 512 lbs. 20 week wait on new motor so I have time to research props. replace carpet, seats, dash and work on gel coat. Please share what you know or have heard. Thanks in advance.

Wow, 20 week wait, you’re about 34 weeks better than everyone else! That’s a smokin lead time. Mine is a 200 pro Xs and I run a 24 Bravo FS, I’m an inch too tall so for you it probably would be fine. I tested Fury’s and Tempest and hands down the bravo handles better, holeshots better, planes at lower speed, sits nicer in rough water at lower speeds. Your hull may be entirely different and I’m sure there will be lots of opinions. Personally, I don’t like the way a Fury feels and on mine, it needs to run lower.

I came to the same conclusions when propping my engine.

The 250 V8 must achieve 6200 rpms at WOT to maximize performance across all power bands and attain maximum fuel economy. Forget about any propellers you ran on an Opti, they will not work effectively on the 4 stroke. A 23P Fury 3 blade that has been true pitched is the most common propeller found to accomplish this on the majority of boats. DO NOT dog this engine down below 6200 WOT. If you feel the need to run a 4 blade it still needs to be capable of reaching the 6200 rpms WOT. I repowered with one of the 1st 250 V8's and had to figure this out on my own.

*Note: True pitching is required on the 23P box prop. No other hacking, whacking, blade thinning.

23P Fury is where I would recommend as a starting point as well. Trophy+ is simply not a good choice with this engine/setup, IMHO.

Ok, I guess I'll start with the Fury 3 blade 23P. I think I have a friend with one. I'll check with him. Then run it and I'll be back with update. 18 more weeks to go, I hope! Thanks for all the support. Really appreciate it. This site is a real advantage.
