Mercury Gold vs Mercury Platinum Warranty Extension

I am looking at some new boats with Merc 250's. They come with a 3 year full warranty and they are talking about adding an additional 2 years of "Gold" warranty but not "Platinum" at no cost. I understand that Gold covers mechanical engine issues but not electrical issues in years 4 and 5. Obviously the Platinum would be better but does anyone have a feel for what the price difference should be between the Gold and Platinum for years 4 and 5? Someone told me that the majority of the times issues in years 4 or 5 would be "electrical" not "Mechanical".............any idea if that is an accurate statement?

And to clarify: Gold and Platinum PRODUCT PROTECTION are absolutely NOT "warranty".

I know that even some dealers refer to it that way- and it's misleading. These are SERVICE CONTRACTS that cover SPECIFIC COMPONENTS (listed) against defects in materials or workmanship.

If you can get "free" GOLD in the deal for your engine: Go for it. You can then spend your money on upgrading and adding years of PLATINUM (note that this becomes more expensive as time goes on).

NO further Product Protection purchases are available after the end of the FACTORY (3 years in most cases) Warranty.
