1985 Johnson GT150 J150STLCOS J6131172 Lower unit
Wanting to service lower unit. I have no clue when the last time seals were replaced.
Boat came from original owner but no service records available.
Is it possible to install a seal kit (Ev/Johnson PN 5006373) without buying all the "special tools" required per the service manual?
Any tools recommended as "at least have these" when doing this project on your own?
Or do I need to "leave this to the professionals"???
My reason for the question is I have a ton of leaking oil from around the prop shaft....and my brain says must be seals....
Any insight is appreciated.

I'd piece part it instead of buying a seal kit you'll end up with unneeded parts. You'll have to pull the rear bearing carrier, there are 4 bolts inside that keep it in place, then you can pull the carrier. You'll need a seal puller and seal installer or use a matching size socket to drive them in they install back to back to seal the prop shaft. To do a proper job, you should drop the lower unit and replace the drive shaft bearing seals and the shift rod cover seals.
