Two 12 volt batteries in series reading 56 volts???

Load testing two 12 volt deep cycle batteries and checking output voltage at trolling motor connection terminals. Load test OK. Each 12.7-13 volts. Hooked back in series along with charging leads. Volt meter reading on single battery +/- 27 volts, if + on one and - contact on the other get 56 volts? Reading at Trolling motor connecting terminals 56 volts
    ???

You can’t get 56V with two 12V batteries. Or 3 batteries. Or 4 batteries etc., etc.. Has to be a measurement error.
If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity,
    nothing else matters.

Your meter is broke, or set wrong, or reading milivolts. as CAT says you can't get that reading from 2 12v batteries. CJ

Is it possible these are 24 volt batteries that should be in parallel?

No, parallel 24V batteries is 24V. Series 24V batteries are 48V.

His meter may be slightly inaccurate. After all, 2 x 27 is 54 which is pretty close to 57. A lead acid battery will have a "ghost charge" which will exceed its normal full charge voltage. I'm not sure of its potential, it is usually 2 or 3 volts. It goes away quickly under load. Hook the T/M up. turn it on, and check then.

I was thinking of Lithium batteries. There is other fishy info in this thread so why not battery type. I have never seen a volt meter that was that far off. Even a $5 meter. Wrong scale would only change the decimal place. JMO Bob

Still too much AC ripple on 24VDC circuit. Something wrong with this!

Oh, just stop it!! That's my trick. Or reading the wrong scale on a old analog meter! The best one I saw was a coworker had a meter set to amps and was testing the voltage on our 208 wild leg at work. It welded the tips to the terminal lugs and blew the wires out of the plastic holders. And yes it blew the fuse in the meter also. The 600amp service was unaffected!! CJ
