    Which prop to run?

For starters I am not sure if this should here or the Mercury page, but I assume it has more to do with the boat. I have a 191 champ with a 175 pro xs on it. Right now I have a 25p 4 blade on it and jumps right up and tops out at about 55mph. One of my friends gave me 24p 3 blade to try and I was wondering what the effect would be if I switched to that prop. I know I’ll be slower out of the water, but will it give me much on the top end? I am new to messing with props so anything helps.

Try it and see how it does.

    I agree with Fred!!!!

As a generality, 3 blade Tempest plus props are quicker on top end. Motor height and vent holes will affect hole shot and top end. Another generality is that 4 blade props should be one pitch lower than 3 blades. Again, experimentation is the key.

Let us know how it goes!

There is no substitute for horse power
. My Buddy ran a 1995 Champ 190 with A 150 Evinrude FastStrike for about 10 years. Back in the day if you fished BASS tournaments, A 150hp was max allowed. Anyway, his 190 with a 150 topped out at about 55-56mph.... Until, sometime in 2006-2007 we put an Evinrude 200 HO on it. Went from a 55mph nice smooth rocking chair to a 70+ mph ChampioN. But most of the time he was just cursing at 60-65 with a BIG smile on his face.

IMO the 24 may be a better prop for you. of course if its a decent prop... Watch RPM and water pressure when messing with props. You don't want to go over max RPM which I think is 5600. Every pitch in prop is typically 200 rpm so if you are lower than that you may be able to use a higher pitch and vice-versa. Remember test under same conditions and watch water PSI. Playing with engine height can also effect performance but don't go under 15 PSI (that's what I was told long ago). I would expect that boat to do 62-64. But I'm not the expert just been a champ guy for many years...

Thanks for all of the responses. Once I get it back from the shop I’ll give that prop a shot and see how it goes
