nominal vs. actual size lumber for bunk boards

With a nominal size 2x6 actually only being 1 1/2 x 5 1/2 is it safe to use a 1 1/2 inch lag screw or should one use a one inch screw to prevent inadvertently having the screw protrude on the loading surface?

    Thanks for any advice

Will depend on the thickness of bunk brackets and washer.
You should be fine..I did one that was of concern --- so I ground the tip of each one off just a little.

If you are using the typical soft woods, the wood can shrink over time or the bolt can countersink itself and stick through. Not to mention you’ll occasionally come across boards that are notably different thickness.
If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity,
    nothing else matters.

Use stove bolts from top before carpet.Lag from under tend to fall out faster.
