Jumping 12v starting battery from 36v trolling system

I recently had a no start while on the water. Luckily I was only a mile out and easily made it back on my trolling motor. I will head out more prepared from this point forward and carry jumper cables with me. If I jump from my 36v system do I need to pull cables off so I am only jumping 12v to 12v? All batteries are traditional lead acid.

    thank you

Just hook jumpers to the trolling motor that has the negative cable attached for trolling motor. Use the negative and positive from last battery in the series.

    wire connnected to it."

To be safest: determine which battery is hooked to the negative cable of your trolling motor. Attach the negative jumper wire to the negative of that battery and to the negative main battery post.
Attach the positive of those two batteries together with the positive battery jumper cable. (Try to) start the motor and immediately disconnect the jumper cables with the motor running.
Some boats have bonding wires which are usually uninsulated jumpers from the most negative battery or batteries to various points of a boat like fuel fillers and such to hold down static. You don't want to put positive potential on those wires as it might burn them out.
It's a lot safer to carry a jumper box, they are small and very powerful.

Any one of the three will work. Just like your battery charger leads make sure you’re connecting +/- on the same battery

Takes 2 minutes to unhook battery terminals if you are not sure if its safe

It goes without saying, but don't try to jump off from a single 24V or 36V Lithium TM battery.

jump pack for many reasons: so you can safetly jump start your own boat and so you can jump someones elses without risking your own equipment/safety.

    TM's are $3500
    Li batteries are $400+
No way I would be jumping anything off them or risk burning out the trolling motor.

You never know what creative electrical systems other boats have.

Just way to much risk that an $80 jump pack could eliminate.

I also carry a jump pact. There are several on the market and they take up less room that jumper cable. No more worries at the end of the day. Plus, most will also charge your smart devices.

According to Minn Kota, you have to use the battery that the negative wire comes off of, or it can blow a fuse in the trolling motor's head.

Use a VOM at home to figure it out. Then you’ll know for sure

Is their a jump pack that can jump a 12 volt lithium? I have looked at a couple including NOCO and they all state that they are only for lead acid. I’m not saying they won’t work but what are the risks?
