Contest it, worse they can say is no.
Friend of mine contested the tax on his house, the went up.He was told the assessor did’t notice the 3rd floor level to the house in the original assessment.

I feel your pain. I am still getting a tax notice on my 1997 Bullet. I replaced the motor in 20 with a 2 Stroke 250 and the taxes combined are over 500.
Dont move to Spartanburg 2 years ago I had a 2015 Ranger Z 119C $1200. I got a Falcon F195 brand new 1st year of Taxes $1800 on A 50K boat. 2nd year they appraised it at $64,000 and slapped me with A $2200 bill. I got my dealer to appraise it at 46,000 and got it down to $1600. They had me paying taxes on my motor on the value of my motor 2X. They had it included in the boat value and separately on just the motor.
Wow, glad I don't live upstate or in Edgefield. So even with a No.Augusta address, you're still in Edgefield County?

You know, that's a lot of money for a hobby or at least it is to me. I couldn't afford the taxes on a new or almost new boat.
When I first bought mine (used in Oct 2020) Edgefield did the same thing. It was like $1700. I fussed about it being a 7 year old boat and still being that amount. Pulled up some comparables of friends I knew in Edgefield. Then they came back and said they made a mistake and charged me twice for the engine. Dropped it to $1200 and acted like it was a favor. Could be something they do and a percentage of people don’t check it??

Hey y'all back check them ,I moved from one county to another right at tax time so I got computer generated bills from both counties .my new bills were twice as high so I showed them my other ones and they said o we can change these ,I said do y'all just pull numbers out of thin air ,y'all better check it out it shouldn't be that much more from one county to another ,a little but not extremely higher
I think that's exactly what they do......."pull numbers out of thin air". Most of these people are pencil pushers and don't know a kayak from a row boat. I don't think they even use the year of the boat & motor, just the make and model it seems like. I don't think they check anything. In my case, I think all they do is look up a Ranger Z521 and Yamaha motor and come to the conclusion it sell for $80,000, so we'll charge tax for that. May not be that way but sure seems like it.
Spartanburg is one of the highest taxed counties in the state. I bought a new 2015 Skeeter ZX225 and got some jacked up tax bill on it. Don't remember the exact amount. I took the original bill of sale to the Auditor's Office and contested it. Was told that the amount was correct. Showed them the bill of sale and asked if they wanted to buy the boat. They had it appraised at $20k over what I paid for it. Adjusted around $400 off tax bill. Just for the hell of it, I called Auditor Office in a neighboring county, Laurens. Was told that they had no idea how Spartanburg came up with the tax amount because that particular model of boat wasn't even on the tax book that was issued from Dept of Revenue in Columbia. Amazing, Spartanburg apparently just made up an amount and sent me a bill. I did ask Laurens County to estimate what taxes would have been in their county for that year and was told it would have been approximately 1/2 of Spartanburg amount was. What a rip-off.
I have lived in Lexington and Dorchester counties and they aren't cheap either. If they are getting their tax amount .from the Dept. of Revenue then we should start putting a lower figure on the purchase amount.......They probably don't even look at that either. Seems like they go by the retail value from the blue book.
I live in Fair Play, Anderson County just southwest of Greenville. I'm paying just under a grand in taxes for a 2013 boat and a 2016 300 2 stroke. My truck is a 2017 and its around the 700 mark.

In Dorchester Cty they use NADA. I assume they others do the same. The issue is with "packaged" boats. NADA shows an asterisk that clearly states the value includes the boat and motor. The tax clerks seem to muss the asterisk .
