Well I've got my poles mounted, wrapped, and ready for my buddy to finish installing the pumps and running the hoses. I just couldn't drill holes in the boat.

Be vary carful turning the motor. I wish someone would of told me they do not clear if you are trimmed up. Learnt the hard way.
What i do at boat ramps is i put the poles down just enough for the tips to touch the water, this gives me full range of movement on the motor.
I built a 1.5 inch flat aluminum spacer and put between the power pole mount and jack plate bracket. It spaced the poles out so it doesnt hit my cowl anymore in any trim position. I'm with you, only after I scratched and pulled part of my engine decal off I realized there is a really tight spot in not paying close attention. The spacer solved the issue, plus it give the poles a little larger foot print.
What mounts did you use?
With the spacers from Hydrila, it put the poles about an 1/8in from the rub rail on mine and I didn't feel comfortable with them that close so I removed them. Now its about 3/4in from the rub rail.
I like how its really close, After i learnt i gotta put the poles down to get full swing of the motor. I like the look way better.
I mounted my brackets further back than Rich I think had in mind when he designed them, but the Atlas plate had 3 holes that was perfect for mounting.
Here's a better pic of where I mounted my brackets.
