Merc 250 V8 water pump replacement question

    Mercury Pro XS 250 V8
    SN - 2B737776

I’m changing out the water pump for the first time on this motor. Should I be in fwd gear or neutral when I put the lower unit back on? Also, is there anything I can do in the garage after the lower unit is bolted back on to ensure everything went together properly? Thank you!

I have worked on several different manufactures outboards over the years. I like to do them in Neutral. I feel that everything just seems to line up better. Getting the spline lined up while holding the lower end up solo can be a PITA at times. If you have someone help you it’s much easier.
when you have the Lower unit apart look things over to see how things need to go back together. Its pretty straight forward.

The new lower are different than ones of the past. Neutral is the preferred position. IIRC, it automatically gets put into neutral anyways.

My understanding is that the new 4.6l engines should not be shifted without the engine running.

It's my understanding they can't be shifted when not running. The motor end is not mechanical.

Neutral. And don't mess with the trim or key switches while the gearcase is off.

Shift shaft connection would be very difficult to "miss" due to an entirely different (slot) design.
