    2001 175 johnson color

Can someone tell me the color code for a 2001 J175PLSIF outboard? I was sold a can of graphite smoke and that, my friends, is not it. It looked pretty close in my barn but then I pulled it out in the sun and....nope. the Grey looks more charcoal-ish. This is the same color as mine.

Thank you for the quick reply. 777177 is what I have. It's not a match. I'll take a picture later today and show the difference. I suppose I could have applied it wrong.

Notice it states for midsection and gearcase not cowl. That does look like the old charcoal metallic from the GT days.

The gear case in the photo has been painted with the 777177 smoke color. There's no way that was the original . I'm at a loss cause everything I've found points to the 777177 as well

Was having the same trouble looking for a matching paint for my Fastrike, the color they say it is doesn't match it is the right numbers or replacement but not the same . I had some by a company but they are out of business and can't seem to get one close yet...lol

It is hard to match as the color is part of the build process. You may want to take the motor by an automotive paint supplier and have them scan it they should be able to get close. My 225 HO is the same color but I've never painted the cowl. IMG_0593.JPG

Thanks, good idea. I'll take close as this is far from a show boat. Haha

The smoke colored paint is a weird one. There was a service letter or bulletin years back on how to apply it. If I remember correctly (no bulletin handy) you had to use at least 4 coats to get the color to come out right.

You know I was curious about that...I was gonna apply a few more coats when I got the chance to try and darken it up.

I ran into that issue from time to time. Years of use, fading, variations, application techniques, ect. I usually just have the paint supply store here match it and mix it. I have a few quarts of the GT color that was mixed for motors and each is a tad different. I have used rattle cans and it does take numerous coats to look ok. On a side note, cant believe how much rattle can paint prices have went up.

Yeah...along with everything else. I try not to dwell on it too much though, it'll take a toll on ya!
