Thinking back to how I mounted my LSS2, the TransducerShield has it mounted backwards. But I never changed the settings to flip it on the water. Guess I don't rely on sidescan much at all.

Best to mount with Cable coming up the Transom or mounting bracket end of the transducer.
I recently watched a YT video where he claimed that the 2D element in the 3N1 is at the cable end of the transducer. He claimed better results if the transducer was mounted "cable out."
Since everything on the 'net is true, I cannot dispute his findings. Who knows?
