    First Derb of the season

Was on Georgian Bay and decided to go for the green ones. Water temp in the bay I was fishing went from 72 in the morning to 84 by noon so super hot day. Livewell intake screen disappeared apparently so had to reach down head first in the water and clear the grass every 20 mins. By 1pm even with ice our limit was not going to make it to 4pm so I made a very difficult decision and set them back. Hard decision to make but I wasn't going to kill 5 green girls. We were on them in the morning but I had zero confidence we'd get another good limit in time. Slow bite, basically had to knock them on the head. Trying not to let the voodoo get in my head I just kept saying to myself "focus on the next bite". Turns out staying positive might just work. In the last hour we ended up getting a 4.11, 5.2, 4.8, 4.2, 3.11 for 22.14 and took the win. Biggest bag I've ever weighed in. Super proud of myself so I had to share.

BASS club event. This is my 3rd year fishing competitively, launched out of Midland, and never fished those waters before so it's quite a big deal for me. Doing another event this year out of Parry Sound. Never been up there but I've heard there are some big bags on a regular basis.

Nice job - got to love an afternoon bite that's even better than a great morning bite. Does your livewell have a recycle option? Just thinking that would have kept the grass out and saved the first bag (icing down further as needed).

Looks like you still lost the one on the left. Only time I've seen those yellow eyes is when they have died. Had it happen on a nice smallmouth a few weeks ago for us. Tongue hooked it and it was dead within 5 minutes. It sucks.

Nice job! I gotta ask could you just not switch it over to recirculating and then just switch the water out every hour or so?

i may be fishing the same tournament. Not sure if this is part of the CBAF? Or another group?

well done, a winning bag of largemouth on g bay is awesome!

    re:losing fish

i personally have never done the recirc ice thing.

i find just constantly flushing in new water and avoiding that temperature shock is more effective. New water, oxygenators and livewell vents/opening your lids every 20 minutes or so to let out any gas has served me well.

those giant post spawn largies can be susceptible to dying from a fight though. I’ve had a 6lber effectively die as soon as I got her in the boat. We had that big wave of spawning females come through the week prior and the girls are in rough shape.
