Will the 80lb work? Sure it will, but I’d opt for the 112lb-36v if it’s within your budget. What’s your current setup?

I have a 101 Fortrex now, i used to have a 80 pounds wich was OK but i'm worried about being able to actually use the Spot lock in the current with the 80.

The issue is not if it's enough thrust the issue for you being on st lawrence is longevity at only 24 volt. You really need go w a 36 volt trolling motor.
Rule of thumb I go by for boat length and trolling motor size. Under 17' 12 volt TM , 17-19' 24v TM , 19' and bigger 36v. I would want a 36 volt trolling motor on a 19.5' boat.
Ditto. 112 motor is the ticket. you should be more than happy with that especially with you having a 101 already.

In that case----go with 36 volts.
I fish the same waters you do. I had a 20 foot boat (aluminium ) with both a Fortrex 101, an Ultrex 80 and an Ultrex 112 ( now). I used Spot Lock with both the 80 Ultrex and the 112 Ultrex with success in current. When moving from one place to another I needed to put the 80 about one number or two more than the 112 ( ex: 6 for the Ultrex 112 would equal 7 or 8 for the Ultrex 80 ) to get the same speed. Because of that, I used more of the battery power during the day but I had enough in both cases. I was a bit close with the 24 volt system sometimes, when there was wind. That great deal on the 80 is interesting but if you can get a 36 volt ( and if you have a 101 Fortrex you have the room for 3 batteries) I would go with the 36 volt Ultrex.
always ran a 80lb fortrex on my z119 - upgraded to a 36v ultrex this year with lithiums. was up st Lawrence for a week and on the day I used it the most my 50ah lithiums got down to 25% on a 10 hour day
would definitely recommend 36v up there
If you're getting a good deal on the 80 i wouldn't hesitate to buy it. Ultrex are hard to find right now. You can always upgrade latter and easily sell the 80.
to answer your question, yes 80 should do just fine.
I don't have an 80lb ultrex, but I do have an 80lb motorguide with a 3 blade aluminum prop and I can tell you that I wish I had 112lbs of thrust when the river is high and running.
I don't have room for a 3rd battery and I cannot afford a single 36v battery either. If you have room, get the 112. It seems the 112s are easier to find too for some reason.
I have ran a 24V- 74lb minn kota on my 19.6 champion since i had it, never needed more. Have a Ghost now and still run it on 24V.
I have a 80lb. Fortrex on my 16.5 ft. Lund and it works great, get the 112lb. for your boat
If you get a good deal on the Ultrex then go for it. If you are worried about longevity on the St. Lowrance then just get 2 - 24v Lithium batteries. My friend has a 20 ft. Boat with a 80 Ultrex and it is just fine, he got it for $1000 which makes it even better.
(2) 24 volt lithiums wouldnt be the answer . the st lawrence with the current is a different beast if you fish it often. as the Op said you can be at times trying to spotlock in 5 mph plus current no 24 volt lithum or not will stand the test. nor would the 80 be enough to hold he needs a 36 volt troling motor period if looking to go long hours in heavy current
