First time lower unit lube change: which way do yellow gaskets go? (Pics)

I have a Mercury outboard, 50hp. I have drained the gear lube, but the yellow washers that act as gaskets for each screw fell out. I notice they have two sides. Which side should be facing inwards/outwards when reinstalling?

I have never had to orient the gasket to a side so I think either way should be fine.

I usually look at which way they are facing on the screw already but I have never heard it matters. I put the fully covered side against the screw head.

You should be able to see the indention the screws left and put them back the same way. FYI they recommend replacing these with every lube change.

Why not post questions in Mercury forum (link below); include model and serial number.

Yellow gaskets can go either way, and used a couple times,
fiber gaskets recommend to use only once.

Maybe he didn’t want to get chastised for lack of serial number when asking a simple gasket question, lol.

The two in the picture are brand new, so they don’t have indentations but still appear different

A serial number seems pretty easy to do, especially with some of these "signatures " that list everything but the serial number.

You can use them 2-3 times before replacement, make sure to torque them to only 8 FT/LBS.
