    Tempest Props

So I noticed that Mercury is now installing a balancing weight inside the hub of the new Tempest props, similar to weights on the wheels of vehicles. None of my older Tempest props have these weights. If you need to stick on a balancing weight, I would think that this is a shortcut in the manufacturing process?

Well that really surprised me to hear this. Certainly less than what I have always thought about their props.

It’s all about dynamic balance. By adding the weight in the hub they are able to balance the prop without removing material from a blade and changing the blade area or shape. Should be a net good, and less stress on the prop shaft, IF the weight stays for the life of the prop.

I field balance large rotating equipment. I know industry wide last few years manufacture of all kinds, fans, pumps saw equipment etc.. have stepped up dynamic balancing from the factory. Maybe Mercury has changed, stepped up balancing tolerances.
