    Jack plate bolts

I ordered a Z-loc jack plate and a bolt kit from Th Marine. I was just wondering what's the diff if any of these bolts or just buying some from like ACE hardware. Heres what I ordered.

They should be stronger than the hardware bolts.

Fasteners come in many different alloys and many different strengths, with the typical marine jack-plate fastener will be a mild strength stainless steel alloy. Not many hardware stores carry these 1/2" fasteners in stainless. My personal preference is also fine thread pitch for these JP fasteners.

I’ll never use SS fine thread bolts with brass nuts. In April 2011,I hit a log at about 40 mph and stripped the threads out of all four nuts. Lost my engine, power poles, jack plate and steering ram. I’ve used standard threads since then.

The fine thread is mechanically stronger. Regardless of thread pitch, the brass nut would have failed. Double nutted with a silicon bronze nut is a good option.

Fine threads are shallow compared to corse.

The fine threads want back off or lose up compare to corse ones.

I guess there is a reason marines charge $20 a bolt.

Got me thinking. About a month ago.
I paided around $19 and change for 6 SS bolts and locking nuts . To install a TM.

My opinion here of coarse, but if using the fine thread hardware, regardless of alloy, the nuts should be half again as much thread as the regular height nut.

So as mentioned already, what we liked about the fine threads in the oil field was you could really pull them up tightly and much easier. Then we double nut them.

Brass nut is used to avoid thread galling which is very common with SS fasteners. Maybe more so with fine thread.

If you are using fine thread SS bolts, check into Nitronic 60 Gr 8 nuts.
