    2005 50 hp Trim issue

My dad has a 2005 mercury 50 hp that will trim and tilt while setting still and will trim all the way down but while running will not trim up any.Is there anything I can check without replacing the whole trim system? Thanks

    Serial Number?

If you trim it up, say 1" only, and then get underway, does it stay in place or is it forced down?

1B180989. I believe he said it will stay in place. He said he trims it up a little before taking off then trims it down a little when it starts to porpoise.

It's possible that he is trying to exceed the maximum trim position (which results in a hydraulic-bypass and inability to increase the trim angle while underway).

Monitor it while he's running (start with it all the way down, get boat on plane, trim up to best performing trim angle- without porpoising). Does it hold the position?

I don’t think it will trim up any while on plane it only will trim up while idling and not on plane.

If that is an accurate statement, there may be a problem in the trim motor, wiring or pump.
