Spark everytime I plug in charger

Wth 2 different onboard chargers (one for lithium) I bought a heavy duty 2 way y that has the port at the transom with the rubber plug cover. Everytime I plug it in using a heavy duty cord I get a spark, sometimes bigger than other times. What should I be looking for?

Mine does the same thing. I have a 4 bank minn Kona going to TM bats and a NOCO 2 bank going to 2 50ah lithiums for live scope. Have not actually seen a spark (prob would if it was dark) but I hear a arc when I plug it in. Assumed it was normal because it was immediately pulling juice.

Every NOCO or MK plug I’ve ever installed on my boats has arced a little when plugged in to power. It’s normal.

If it bothers you, plug in the boat first then plug into the receptacle.

My charger recommends plugging in the charger first then the wall. Impossible to get a spark that way. I started doing it the first time mine sparked.

Thanks guys. I use a lighted end on the heavy duty charge cord so I know when I'm getting power so really don't need to see a spark to confirm...hahaha.

A transformer, which is one of the first things the power cord goes to in a battery charger, is just a coil of wire around a piece of iron or steel. It is a direct short until the coil gets saturated with AC current, and that builds a "resistance" into it. In that initial moment it draws a lot of current. If you were to connect DC instead of AC into it with the same voltage, you would have a meltdown which would make that spark seem tiny by comparison if the circuit breaker didn't pop.

I put a light switch in the line just before it gets to the receptacle outlet I plug the charger into. Hook everything up and flip the switch. Works for me and no spark.

Your connecting a load to a line. Its just arcing. It should stay in the plug. Mine does this as well.
