    Replacing Gauge Cluster???

My speedometer on my 96 ranger as well as the depth finder are shot.

I was thinking of replacing these both with a fish finder that has gps speed. My question is, is it technically illegal to not have a dedicated speedometer gauge working on a boat?

im also looking to modify my dash and flush mount the screen/make a new custom dash bezel. Any recommendations on fish finders with this capability that have a flush mount type of screen?

It is not illegal. The old style mechanical speedos are inherently inaccurate. GPS is the way to go.

I would use the speedo hole for a merc monitor. Analogs are like a buggy whip.

Bowden tube gauges, like speedometers are basically inaccurate in the first 25% of their movements, like 0 to 20 on an 80 gauge. If you really need to know how fast you're going, then a G P S is the way.

Thanks I was unaware of this kind of monitor. Sounds like a good fix!

I have the Evinrude version of the Mercury smart gauge. I simply removed my speedometer and installed it there. I have two graphs with GPS mounted on the side of the drivers console. If I wanted to see my speed I would look at them. An analog speedometer is notorious for being very inaccurate anyways.

Wow thats pretty neat, i like how theres no modification to the dash needed. Will have to look into that!

Here is the one I ordered. If you go the Amazon route, look at delivery date and don't expect a lot of delivery update info. Ordered it in early April and getting delivered tomorrow. I didn't mind as I saw the long delivery time when I ordered.
