2000 225 opti cut out problems

    <0T090851>

Been having a problem with my 2000 opti 225 she gets out of the hole fast I can run wide open and get to the 5700 limit. Then it seems to godown to around 5000 and slows down tgen after a bit it goes back up. Sounds like it bogs a bit when doing this. What should I be looking at. Can it be my battery it is old it is stamped with 2017 but starts even after fishing all day also I hav smart craft and it don’t beep or show anything( mercury rebuild it in 03 and added that ) It will sometimes beep when idling through a channel or something. But other than that it runs great. But sometimes does this bog thing when going wide open

Sounds like you’re dropping a cylinder. Might be a coil

If it were a coil, they tend to cause a sudden and instant drop in RPMs. It sounds more like a fuel restriction. See if your pulse pump has debris built up in it. Your fuel lines might be deteriorating. If so, there is a step by step procedure for this. Fuel line from the tank to the primer, the primer itself, to the pulse pump and the fuel filter. All has to be done at once or you will cry some more. Someone will pipe in with the link for the directions to solve deteriorating fuel line.

agree with TOM , be careful with this situation like powerhead damage will occur in lean condition , monitor fuel psi when problem occurs

Well it will top out rpm’s at the limit then back down. My boat is a heavy ranger and it usually runs about 50 but when this kicks in it will back me down to 44to 45

Again is it instant. Let's say you are running 5500 RPMS and then suddenly it drops to 5000 Rpms or is it within a few seconds or more slowly? This is a very important question. If instant then it is likely a coil. If slowly, then likely fuel restriction.

It is kinda slow it doesn’t throw us too much it will go from 50 to 45 then after a few it will go back to 50 It is kinda quick. I will say a few years ago I was loosing all power and Sherm found a bad #6 plug was fouled been great since Till this

a cyl drop test can be preformed to determine if its one cyl loosing spark , if you back off throttle then run it back up to wot will it regain max rpm, again be careful

If you would, please take a moment to review the Announcements at the top of the Forum, and be sure to provide the Required Info (serial number) when posting. Thanks!

Did I understand correctly that the last person to change spark plugs was Sherm a couple years ago?

I would recommend starting with the BASICS, including all over-due maintenance (see the FAQ Section "Recommended Annual Maintenance.... for Optimax engines" for full details).

    -Compression Test
-Spark Test (Good time to address the spark plugs that are part of the ANNUAL maintenance)
-Fuel Quality, Delivery, and Air/Fuel Pressure Tests
-Belt/spring tension check (70 lbs/in minimum spring tension)
-All other recommended maintenance up to date

ok today I stopped at harbor freight and got a timing gun. Found no spark on bottom left coil. Tomorrow I will pull the plug and check to see if it went bad and swap coils and see it it’s the coil. Also I did drain the vst and got all the black specks out and kept priming Gas to get it all out the filter was bad put the new filter in The funny thing is I unplug all the coils and was most noticed on all but was faintly on the 6 I also got a compression gauge to check each cylinder. I’m hoping that I just need a new plug again. So I will just change them all I’m hoping that may be it but with Sherm changing the plug the last time I’m wondering if the coil has problems ftt rt I’m time to time.

Ok update I changed the plugs they were original still had black paint on them. Except for the one that Sherm replaced it really seems so much smoother. And I’m getting spark as far as I can tell. The plugs were really carboned up bad and black I do have another question I was wondering if the smartcraft could be off on the temp. I used a infrared thermal on both states and they went to 130 then dropped but the smartcraft will go to around 120 then drop to 109 usually. Is there anything I can look at

Pull and test the stats by suspending them with string in a pan of water, you'll need a kitchen thermometer to confirm water temperature.

I have done that already I water pan tested them and they both opened up at 130. And on the motor they both go up to 130 then it starts dropping as I can watch them with the infrared thermometer but the smartcraft is showing a lower temp just wondering if that was right

Did you move them to cold water after they opened, and verify that they completely closed within 10 seconds or less?
