Clarification to the update: They were able to drain some fluid from the sacs…enough to culture so they can target with a specific antibiotic. When he was life flighted from Aultman Hospital in Canton to the Cleveland Clinic branch Akron General Hospital, they believed that the fluid sac was ON his spine. There was a team of surgeons there who could do that surgery. Now that they know it’s two sacs, one on each side of his spine, they’re considering transferring him to the main Campus of the Cleveland Clinic in downtown Cleveland. They have the specialists and technology there to do this surgery more effectively. These two fluid sacs are about as big around as a quarter and about 2 inches long! Good news, which could change by the hour, is that he was on 3 BP meds, but is now on only one. And, his BP has stabilized. Even when his heart rate goes way up or down, his BP is stable. They think that the proximity of the sacs to his heart could be causing the periodic A-Fib. Docs are still cautiously optimistic but things could change anytime.

Baby steps forward today. He’s off the vent and breathing on his own. Yesterday’s MRI showed a third sac of infection at the base of his spine. BP is still good and stable. Hopefully the antibiotics are working.

Since they took him off the vent, they no longer have him sedated. We got to talk to him briefly. He couldn’t verbalize much, but said “uh huh” and nodded to our comments. Tiny steps forward for today.
