Repowering with Mercury 250 XS Four Stroke on 2011 Ranger 521.
    Coming off running a 2011SHO withT1 25P.

Most people run the 23p Fury with good success.

I have a hard time understanding why the new Merc 4 stroke engines need a lower pitch prop on the same hull as a SHO. If the horsepower is the same shouldn't one engine be able to pull the same pitch prop as the other? I'm not poking or taking sides, I just want to understand why you would need to drop down from a 25p all the way to a 23p on the same hull with the same power rating. Is it that one engine revs a lot higher than the other and the different pitch prop is needed to stay within the operating range or is it that the torque curves are different? I have a 250 SHO and the WOT is 6000 rpm. What is WOT on the Merc? Someone with the answer enlighten me. Thanks

6200 max rpms, also the newer gearcase has lower slip % than the older/other ones, add in the fury is known to run stiff so a 23 is more like a 24.

We’ve had good results with a 23 tempest on newer 21 foot rangers so that is what I bought for when my new 4 stroke arrives for my 2011
