Spring turkey season opened today. Stepped out of the truck at 6am and had a bird flopping by 6:31am. Birds were still bunched up last week but I got lucky and had one break off from the flock and roost solo directly across the field from my blind last night. He gobbled twice on the roost and once on the ground in response to my yelping and then came hauling across the field in full strut to whoop up on my jake decoy. After he had his way with the jake, I fed him some #5 shot to the noggin! He weighed 19.5lbs, had a 10" beard and 1" spurs. Figured it was probably a 3 year old bird.
I pressure cooked the legs and thighs down already and we're having wild turkey pot pie for dinner this evening. We'll enjoy some fried turkey breast, mashed potatoes and corn here in a few days once we get the pot pie polished off.
