    Mercury Prop Hub question

I have a question about the new Mercury SSR HD prop hub that fits props like the Fury and the Bravo 1 FS.

I just got a new Bravo 1 for the Jaguar, and the hub supplied was the SSR, with the rubber hub attached to the shaft spline.
Got it to fit, after some work, and realized that the same hub was in the Fury that I took off. Nothing I tried could remove the hub from the Fury.

I'm used to the solid metal hub that was the previous standard. Easy to install and remove if you changed props. Now it looks like every time you buy a prop, you have to buy a new hub kit to go with it.

Can anyone provide any wisdom on this, including how to remove the SSR hub without destroying it, or damaging the prop?

    Many thanks!!!

This vid may help. At the end, he shows how to remove the hub (around 2:20 mark)

That video is from 2017. Things are very different now. I tried that on one of the newer hubs and it never moved. I was using all my might and got scared I was going to break something. My boat guys said a press is the only way with some of these. Getting the new one in was also more of a chore than the older ones. I had to chill it and lube it. The final insertion wasn't completed until I torqued it down on the motor shaft.

The ssr is a pita to get out, I've taken them to my shop and pressed them out. I've also whooped them out with a big socket and a mini sledge (a great way to make an accident happen). If you plan on playing with props go ahead and buy the HD hub that we all used to run. It will not cause a performance issue. To my knowledge the ssr was designed to eliminate prop chatter or ping when going in and out of gears ie: drive to reverse. I never experienced it. You could also just keep a ssr in each prop if you end up with only two props for the boat.

The above video is for the torque flow, and it does not apply to any torque master lower units (the silver ones) 200 hp and up I believe.

On a side note, I did conjure up a floor jack under the frame of my brothers truck and was able to floor jack one out, shade tree mechanic style

Here is a direct quote from the Merc forum mod: The SSR Hub Kits can be removed, but really are best if you consider them a "permanent fixture" in the prop.

I believe person can rig up a puller using all thread(.500" or .750"). Couple nuts, the right washer and short piece of pipe the right size. No press needed.

This is going to be my answer for the two props that have them in.
For the average boater, they are non-removable.

Now your thinking, I didn't think about drawing it out, you could probably cut a piece of heavy pvc pipe even and use it as the base for the draw out. Once that thing starts moving it comes out pretty easy.. its the getting it moving part thats hard.

Redngoo is correct. All thread, nuts, and washers works great. That's how I remove mine.
