    Right or Wrong

I was once told that in the winter after you trailer your boat and lower the engine to drain it you should crank it for a split second to make it cough the water out of the pump. Others say never start the engine when out of the water.

    What is correct?

Where are you storing the motor? If inside, I wouldn't even worry about it. If out, just lower it and let it drain.

Cranking with no water is tough on the water pump impeller. Not saying I haven't ever done it, but I sure don't make a regular practice of it.

The main thing you want to avoid is pulling it out, with the motor up, and letting it sit somewhere that more water can get in it, and then freeze.

I always drop my trim at the ramp before I strap the boat down to leave, and let the lower drain.

The best way is to drain it while strapping down, this drains all the water before you head home.

What ELGIN said, I always lower the engine all the way down and let her drain while I'm strapping her down, then when I get home I always lower her down again.
