    2005 Tr196 - What to do opinions

    Like the title says...

I have an '05 Tr196 with a blown OptiPop. It appears new 200hp engines for repower are not available for at least a year. So, the question... repower with a 150 ProXS (widely available), take a chance on a used motor (if I can find one), or sell this hull for whatever and start fresh with a new boat? I'm leaning on selling this and starting over although I like this hull. A lot.

There are so many ways to look at it. Here is just my 2 cents. please keep in mind life timing, financial position, and mindset all comes into play. Repower it.

I have the same boat and engine (though mine is running strong) but have been looking at new boats. After looking pretty hard at new boats I've come to the conclusion of...
    1) the 196 hulls are fast though maybe not as "easy" to drive as some newer brands and models
    2) the layout is still pretty standard. The only major difference I see on some is the large center rod lockers
    3) the new boats (the ones I would want) are getting crazy prices, more than my small first house in some cases
    4) all the newer gauges, seats, flooring, etc, can be upgraded on my boat, in some fashion

Looking at all this I decided to just upgrade my boat. I have added LED dimmable deck lights, added a 9" HB G3 at the bow, 10" HB G3 at the dash Ram mount, Lowrance HDS7 Gen2 touch in dash, redid the brakes on the trailer and new tires, and I started putting carbon fiber wrap over the wood grain covers like the gauge surrounds and the ignition panel. Next up is carpet, Gatorbak bunk covers, trolling motor, and maybe a Minn Kota Raptor.

$75,000 New boat that I wanted, Caymas CX19
$25,000 current boat paid for (bought used) and with upgrades about current and future

$50,000 still in my pocket. That's a lot of trips, tackle, and fuel. And enough left over to max a yearly Roth contribution several times.

Same boat & motor….luckily my Opti with 650 hrs is still running like new.

    Options I’d consider:
    1-New Powerhead
2-Rebuilt Powerhead (quicksilver dressed if I could get one)
3-Repower with 4S 175 (if more readily available)
    4-Repower with 200 4s (mercury non-pro xs, honda, suzuki)
    Lightning 6

    1998 TR20

I Replaced my 1999 Evinrude 200 with a New Evinrude 150HO a few years back and have no regrets.

I did lose top end speed, but the Lakes in Connecticut are not very big, so it wasn't a big concern,

Hole shot is awesome, saved myself alot of money going from a 200 to a 150

I would get a new powerhead if I could not get a new proxs 4 stroke. You have experience with the rest of the outboard so you know its condition.

Thank you all for your input. I bought this boat used a couple of years ago. Oddly - I guess it's odd- it came with a 150 Opti. I could get 55mph out of the 150 but the hull wants more to be at its designed best. Still, it's a hoot to drive and, as stated, the layout doesn't seem a heck of lot different than the 2022 19 TRX. Crazy time to need a repower. Thanks again folks!

Same setup at yours exactly, BlueB. I've seen a couple of 175 ProXS used. Prices are crazy. I'm not sure the 4 stroke 150 would perform as well as the 2 stroke, but a new motor with warranty is only a few thousand more than I'm seeing used Opti's. It's all about the $$. Ah, and then there is the rusty MarineMaster she's riding on. I left that part out of the OP.

Mine is the ta 196 crappie version, its only rated for a 150.Bet the 196 with a 175-200 would fly,the 150 is fast enough.

Had a 04 and an 05 with a 200 and both would run 71-73 in the right conditions and were a handful after about 65mph. I like the idea of keeping $50k in ur pocket and a new powerhead. At these gas prices that's at least a couple years of fuel! Thanks Joe, u goof!
