    Ice out

    The time is near,
looking forward to next weekend and open water. I have already caught my first bass of the year. Now
I am ready to get the boat floating and start the season.

Bass through the ice don’t count unless you are targeting that species

Looking through my camera it looks like my lake is still frozen tight. Glad I still have 20 more days to catch pond bass down here. Then back to the frozen north.

Catch and immediate release has been year round since 2015 I believe.

Big warm up for next week I would think most lakes will be open by the end of next week.

    Steve

My lake looks about the same today too. But the open water areas are growing in size quick.

Union is the last to freeze and the last to open up. Not sure I will be home in time for blade baiting the first week after ice out. Got to stay in Florida and keep the wife happy.

Ice fishing....one step up from sitting in the waiting room at the dentist office and watching grass grow and paint dry, or a soccer game...can't forget to add that to the list. Bring on the warmth and the sunshine I haven't seen it since September. Just moved back here to work for the Sheriff's Department and I am questioning my motives. The pay is way better and you can't beat the north in the summer though! I'm more than ready for spring to remind myself why I made the leap!!

Anyone ever fish Superior? On my short list of places to go this year away from the boat traffic.

With the correct gear ice fishing is quite enjoyable. Also, I get to fill my freezer for the year.

You should get out on Saginaw Bay at some point in your life to jig walleye through the ice. I actually enjoy it more than boat fishing. The adventure of going out 3 to 12 miles is half the fun.

That is definitely something I have never done. I can see the adventure in that for sure! Nobody can argue that Walleye aren't delicious either.

I agree castforcash. I’ve boat fished for a long time, walleye and smallmouth both. This was the first year ever ice fishing on Saginaw bay and Erie for walleye. I really enjoyed it as long as the ice is good. I used a quad this year but I’m keeping my eyes open for a used snowmobile.
