Tugboat - the parts you don’t normally see …

Margaret McAllister in dry dock in a Baltimore shipyard. Just be glad you don’t have to fuel it
She started life as a USN tug in 1966. Here’s the nuts & bolts - http://tugboatinformation.com/tug.cfm?id=489

Very impressive! 4,000 hp and 20,000 gallons to fill it up.

Aftercoolers to drop the turbo air temp before entering the intake.

Those are quert nozzles around the props used to help direct water flow to the props and concentrate thrust. They also offer protection of the props to some degree. The Z drive means the engine feeds power through a drive shaft (running forward of the engine) to a gear box where another drive/prop shaft runs aft and exits the hull to mount the prop. I see she previously used a Fairbanks Morse engine for primary power then switched over to the CATs. Sure like hearing big engines run under load and the whine of large turbochargers....

I should have known. After another look I see the charge air pipes from the turbo compressor to them. haven seen that style after cooler before. Of course I only get to work on the very old stuff... Have any questions on 379/398/399 or 348 series engines and I can help!

LOL maybe I’ll take you up on that someday … I’m a Detroit Diesel / MTU guy, I was onboard to work on the 671 Detroit fire pump engine. We rarely get involved with Cats …

I Did not read the article so I don't know what specific engine that is, but Cat does make a marine engine, the C8.7 that is supercharged.
