    were you stopped?

By a cop and got out of the ticket, what did you say

    I will start
Was on the way home from dinner and I was doing 70 in a 60 and the guy behind me was trying to pass us and State Trooper coming at us signaled to pull over, which we both did. He said to me Sir you were doing 70 in a 60 is there an emergency. I stated the wife was having HOT flashes and I was trying to cool her down.

When he stopped laughing, he handed me back my license and said, Slow down and have a good day. As I was pulling away, he was writing the other guy a ticket.

My best ticket avoidance was not by talking. Schoolmate wanted to race me in his new to him Grand Prix. I relucntantly agreed to outrun him in my Nova. We raced at the local place everyone does, about a mile and a half straight that also was the city limit boundary at the time, and also a dead end further down. We raced down, I won, turned around and lined up to race back, and we saw the cops waiting on us, they had turned in off hwy 231. Dayum. We eased on past them, me in front, the Grand Prix behind me. They pulled in behind us. When you get to 231, you have to go left or right. Left is Wetumpka (where we were), right is Montgomery. Wetumpka PD was the cops. I turned right. The Grand Prix turned left. He got pulled over.

When I was 15, my mom financed a truck for me. I had the down payment money and made the monthly payments from cutting grass. Thing was, I couldn't drive it until I turned 16. Well that didn’t work, I started sneaking out after midnight and driving. After a few times of driving around locally I decided to venture over cumberland mnt into tn. As I come into tn I pass a beer store and it was open. So I'm 15 and the legal age at the time to buy beer was 18, and I am heading home. Coming down the mtn there is a state police car sitting at the state park. I stop at a red light, a nova pulls in behind me and then the trooper pulls in behind the nova. The light turns green and the trooper turns on the blue lights. He walked up to my truck and shined his light on me then on the six pack on the other end of the seat and asked my name. I told him and he said " you can go, your not the one we're looking for ". That was the last time I snuck out and went driving.

I have been lucky numerous times with just warnings. I have a CDL class "A" license that I keep current, just incase I may have to return to driving a big rig. I think that LEO's don't want to mess up someone's livelihood that drives for a living.
I don't always post or reply but when I do, I...?

In my youth, about 5 centuries ago, I had a 1953 Chevrolet that I bored .187 over and it was quite torquey. I friend had a 1953 Corvette 6 cylinder slushbox. We were at the local drive-in restaurant and decided to see who was faster. We went out to Pennsylvania Avenue extended, got a flagman and raced. Quite a lot of the other cars from the drive-in came with us. Must have alerted the local State Trooper because he passed all of us and pulled everybody over, collected all our licenses. As he approached my car he said "Failure to stop at a stop sign" which was at the access road. He got through writing the cars ahead of me and whipped out his clipboard I said I had stopped at the stop sign. He shined his flashlight at me, gave me back my license and said move on.

Coming home from working second shift, made an illegal right on red turn. I was maybe a mile from home and pretty much the only one on the road (or so I thought ) … got lit up, had everything ready for him by the time he got up to the window. He asks “You know why I stopped you ?” I said “Well, you don’t have a giant check for $1,000,000 for me so I guess you’re not the Prize Patrol” He busted a gut laughing as he handed me my stuff back and said to be safe and have a good night.

I’ve been stopped in pretty much every state on the east coast (mostly for DOT spot checks and such, not because I’m a horrible driver) … if you just talk to them like any other person you’d encounter in your day that goes a long way. If you were speeding or whatever just admit it. No need to kiss their ass or be combative. Also I’m a stickler for keeping my proof of registration & insurance current and within reach. I never had to make a cop wait while I rooted around for my paperwork, I usually have it ready before they get to the window. Don’t waste their time and they won’t waste yours. I’ve had a couple of speedings downgraded to a non points violation or drove away with a warning.

A couple of years ago right around Mississippi going into Alabama. Two lane road each way. The sporty car to the left to me had Miss plates. I had out of state planes. That car was driving fast. I was in the slow lane and just tagging along with the car and a cop jumps out of somewhere and pulls me over. I was agitated and said, “the other car was going much faster than me.” The cop said amused, “I know, but I caught you!!!” And he said it in a way that I was hoping he would let me off. And he did. He gave me a warning. I think he saw the bunch of fishing rods I had stacked in the front seat. That helped I think. That was a really cool guy. :)

When we were first married my wife and I went to take pre-natal classes at the local hospital. At the time i had my souped up Gran prix a sleeper car for sure headers ,line-loc and ladder bars it ran pretty fast on the street .As I turn the corner going down the road off the highway to the hospital I punched it , about 600' out comes a police car from the side street and I go blowing by him. He puts the lights on and pulls me over ,comes to the car says where you going to a fire....lol I just pointed to my wife in the front seat who was only a few months pregnant at the time and says no to the hospital ,why didn't you say so follow me and puts his siren back on and gives me a escort to the emergency room....my son that was in my wife's belly is now a police officer...lol

I was the passenger in my buddies truck for this one. We were coming home after a day of pheasant hunting. An ambulance passed us on a 2 lane hwy. No lights on. So my buddy decides to keep up, doing probably 15-20 over. A state bull going the other way whips around and pulls us over. I was shocked when he came to the window and my buddy, with a very angry tone, says "WHAT?". Not the way I talk to LEO's. The cop was taken aback too. I thought "you gettin' a ticket dude!". But the cop let him go, said don't follow so close. Blew me away.

Long, long ago in my youth I had a really fast El Camino. My wife and I followed a fire truck out of town about 8 miles to see the fire. When the fire truck turned off on a side road we just turned around and headed for town. I was driving pretty fast and when I came out of a dip in the road I saw headlights behind me. At that point I just aired it out. When I got into the edge of town I pulled into a line of cars. About 5 minutes later the DPS car pulled along side of me and the officer pointed for me to pull over.
He got out and asked for my license and asked how fast I was driving. I told him, with a straight face, that I didn't know and that were just driving back to town. He told me that he had been running over 140 and didn't even see me again until I slowed in traffic. He did not give me a ticket because he did not know my speed but said that if he ever caught me driving fast agin he was taking me to jail.

Got pulled for running a red light and had expired registration last year, told him I was going for a COVID test and he let me go. I was actually going for a test.

I've gotten away without a ticket many times in my lifetime. The most recent was when I was sitting at a stop light in a 66 Mustang I had just restored as a track car. A guy driving a BMW next to me started the "lets race" taunting so we did and I embarrassed him, he turned off and a mile and a half down the road a cop that had been watching the intersection pulls me over. Could have been my car (he liked it) or my CC permits (he liked those too and I was carrying), but he didn't issue a ticket saying that he didn't get a reading on how fast we were going but he should ticket me for "accelerated take off". He warned me to use better judgement next time and let me go.

County cop pulled me over for 74 in a 55, I told that I was on my way to my girlfriends and her parents were gone for the day... handed my license back to me and said keep it under 65 and told me to make sure to wear a condom.

My Dad was a cop for a while and knew a bunch of them, still played cards with some of them. Due to this 3 times I got pulled over for minor things I was let go because they asked if I was his son, given a verbal warning and let go.

Got targeted while going through a toll booth once with my rig. Trooper was trying way too hard to try n smell alcohol on my breath. Without him asking, I told him your welcome to search the boat or vehicle for what your trying to smell. He thanked me for being safe and told us to have a good day.

As a former LEO of 30 years, I think this is the best advice there is. When it came to traffic violations, a motorist got a warning 95+ % of the time from me when they shook their head and said, "Yep, you got me. I was going too fast" (or didn't stop at the stop sign, made illegal U-turn, etc.). Of course there are always exceptions; 100 in a 35 zone, at fault in a crash, etc.

When somebody asks me the best way to avoid a ticket, I always tell them to be respectful, admit your guilt and maybe even throw out an apology. It worked great with me.

Almost sure ways to guarantee a ticket; talk about quotas, ask the officer if he has anything better to do, when speeding say that you were just keeping up with traffic, say that it must be a slow day, etc. In the situation where it could go either way as far as a ticket or a warning, the driver's attitude can easily be the deciding factor.

I was going 52 in a 30 coming into town and a trooper picked me up. When he came to my window all I said was “wow I was really lead footin it there”. He said thanks for just being honest. I was 35 years old and had never had a speeding ticket in my life. So I think that helped when he ran my plates. He just let me drive on.

A few years ago at midnight in a snow storm nervous nellie me was having some irregular heart beats after going to bed. Told my wife I'm going to the hospital about a half hour drive. She comes with me and it's snowing hard roads covered. I have a two wheel drive F150 and we come to hill at the top is a traffic light with a South Hill Va. police car stopped at the light. I proceeded to drive around the officer and turn right. He pulls out lights on and I pull over on flat pavement. Officer asks what are you doing? Told him I'm trying to get to the hospital and didn't want to get stuck on the hill. He said follow me as he escorted us to the hospital with emergency lights on. He made sure I got into the ER before leaving. Ended up with nothing serious found and drove home.

Remember in 74 when 55mph speed limit became a thing? 18 years old and headed to work in Tulsa on a Monday morning after a weekend at the lake doing 72 on the Broken Arrow expressway. Highway patrol heading in the other direction did a nose dive came across the median and pulled me over. This was back in the day when it was still acceptable and maybe even courteous to get out and meet the officer at the rear of your car which I did. We were walking towards each other when I reached for my wallet in my back pocket and realized it was in my glove box. I mumbled "oops my wallet is in the glovebox" as I turned around and went to retrieve it. The officer didn't hear what I said and asked where I was going. I said it again as I continued to walk back to the drivers door. Again he didn't hear me and shouted "I said where are you going??" I turned around to say it again so he could hear me and see he's in a shooting stance with his hand on his holstered pistol. Scared the shit out of me how quickly that escalated. He hovered over me while I retrieved my wallet and trying to be nice wrote me a ticket for 70 instead of 74. It was a $100 ticket and it would have been another $25 something dollars for every 1 mph over the old 70mph limit. Back then they kept your drivers license and that became your permit to drive until you paid the ticket and got your license back.

One week later and within a mile of the first ticket I'm headed to work sitting on 70mph. Highway Patrol (not the same one) headed the other direction locks it up comes across the median and pulls me over. Not having a license I get to show him my ticket from the previous week. He shook his head handed me back my previously issued prized citation and told me I need to learn how to slow down. Yes sir officer. Thank you officer. Have a great day officer.

Mine was way back in my motorcycle days. Was going home to Shreveport from Pensacola for the weekend one fall in 1975. Was on I20 in the eastern part of Louisiana and Speedo was reading 120 mph. The sun was setting and was starting to get cold. And in my eyes. As I got close to Monroe I slowed down to 80. Kept seeing a car way behind me. Well it was a highway trooper. He asked me where I was going in such a rush. Told him was trying to get home before it got colder. He let me go and Said keep it at 55.
