    Stratos 285 magnum

Stratos 285 magnum is 18'6". Rated for 175. I currently have a 175 HPDI on a manual jackplate and 2 power poles. The 175 weighs 468 lbs. I wanna repower with another Yamaha. The I4 175 comes in at 480lbs and the V6 200 is 529. Would it be a mistake to go with the 200 sho? Would the weight difference be a big issue with the boats handling? TIA.

I would not overpower it especially since it is a lot more weight added. It will change the whole dynamics of the boat from both a performance and fishing standpoint. The extra weight could very likely cause some issues with towing especially if you have a jackplate.

I have a 1989 285 Pro that I put a 2005 Mercury 200 on but the weight difference between that and the Johnson 175 I replaced was just a few pounds. It runs like a raped ape, and I have had 2 insurance claims on that motor on the boat and they paid them both.

Its not when you have a claim on your boat you need to worry. Its if something tragic happens and someone is suing you for a large sum…. Thats when things get dicey and I think you’d have an issue. They dont break out investigators when they need to replace a $2k LU, but when you kill someone and theres a several million dollar liability claim, you better be on the up and up… if your not, good luck the rest of your life, because your insurance company is going to wipe their slate clean and your in financial ruin.

Then you have to ask yourself, was that 5mph worth it?
