When I was younger and still attended church, the pastor of 30+ years retired and the church bought him a Jaguar sedan as a "retirement" present. I remember scratching my head wondering where my tithe had been going over the years...

Just my opinion and .02 worth .... If I were in your shoes, I would figure out what my dad would have wanted to give. I would give that amount in honor of my dad ....

I don't understand what you're saying. A man of the cloth should never retire? Just keep preaching until he keels over?

At some point the preacher may realize age has caught up with him and he can't perform his duties as effective as he used to. Very few can go on till they die. I doubt he will ever stop encouraging people to turn to God, just won't be doing it full time.

Guess it depends on how much he was making. I’m not religious, and I’ve seen some churches pay 6 figure salaries.

If your dad gave you money I’d donate some of that.

Well if you do not attend the church and your father has passed why worry about giving anything? If your father wanted him to have something he would have said so in his Will I would assume.

When my mother passed she had been going to a local church. The minister came to the funeral and did a good job for her. In her Obituary I requested in lieu of flowers, that people make donations to her church. I know this is different than your situation, but I would make a donation by the amount you inherited, or what you feel good about giving. If he really helped your father, then honor your father’s legacy.

Ask him if you can do doughnuts in the parking lot and go from there. But I would give 100.00 if you can spare it.

I don’t know your finances, $100,000.00 seems fair to him and the Lord.

WTS , if I felt some connection to this minister and wanted to offer some contribution of support I would toss in a hundred and that would be fine with me.. If I was in a better financial position I might contribute more.

When we go to the casino which is extremely rare, 3 times in 7 years, we spend what we can afford to gamble which is basically 100. I look at both situations as a gamble.

Give what you feel comfortable giving...period.

But....remember, this is for his retirement, and is NOT a charitable donation because he is getting it as opposed to the church.

I feel that given the knowledge you have provided, start going to church and being active would be the best way to honor your dad and also show respect to that pastor. Im sure that would mean more to him than any donation you could give.

Maybe im crazy but I find it bizarre they are asking for a gift to fund his retirement account. I mean ive chipped in for a few retirement gifts like a nice dinner etc but im not funding someones 401k.

Ford F150's? Jaguar sedans? Wow, I guess those communities had no poverty or other places where that money could have served a better purpose. I've witnessed enough preacher worship in my time to not be surprised. There's irony in the fact that churches universally teach against the love of money and earthly possessions.....but how do they reward a pastor at retirement? MONEY and CARS!!!

Good grief...the man didn't ask for y'all to give him your view of the church/ministry. He simply asked for a little input on what his contribution (on his fathers behalf at that) should be

OP, I would say the $100 that you're thinking of is fair and decent, but $200 wouldn't be a stretch in my opinion. I say that because you knew your father better than any of us. If he had a good relationship with the minister, chances are the minister passed the test of friendship and servitude in your fathers eyes, so give in his honor
