Is the Helix 12 side imaging and Helix 12 down imaging the same unit with different transducers? Can I use my old side imaging transducer on a new down imaging Helix 12 and get side imaging?

No.

A CHIRP unit does 2D sonar only.
A DI unit does 2D and DI.
A SI unit does 2D, DI, and SI.

In no case can you add a function with a transducer (except one), in every case you can delete a function with a lesser transducer.
The one exception is you can add SI to a DI+ unit with a MEGA 360 transducer.
