    Preferred reel for skipping

What’s your casting reel preference for skipping jigs?

Going to spend some time learning to skip docks this season.

I personally prefer a Daiwa with a SV spool. In my case that is a Steez A with the SV spool from the Steez SV TW. This is for sure a rather costly option. A Tatula SV, Coastal SV a Alphas SV TW and others (with an SV or equivalent spool) will do just fine as well.

I really tried to get the same skipping results with my Shimano MGL and DC reels. But for some reason I just cant. Might be just me being too stupid.. lol

But with my Steez A + SV spool I can skip like nothing else. It is easy no matter the lure size and weight.

The rod is also important here and should have enough tip. I use a NRX 804c.

SV spool reels. The Tatula Elite Long Cast spool in my Fuego CT skips really well too. I wonder if the Elite Long Cast is skips as well or if my Fuego has stronger magnets.

I use an Alphas SV TW now, but started with a 2017 Tatula SV TW. They are versatile for a reason.

Another vote for Daiwa. The Zillion SV is a great reel.

Skipping is all in the technique, you can skip with any good baitcaster.

Guess I will go against the grain,, I have tied both the Zillion and the Tatula in SV trim and they do work well but I prefer my Shimano Curado DC for skipping ,,but in truth you can learn to skip with any baitcaster but the SV or the DC reels do help shorten you learning curve and of course the rod makes a major difference also,, my most used skipping rod is a NRX 854 JWR but I have to say the new Daiwa Steez Power Pitch is about to nudge it right out of the rod locker

How loose or tight do you have the dc?

just enough to take out all of the side to side play of the spool ,, just a touch more than they recommend for setting the spool

Which ever one is in my hand when the occasion arises. Technique is way more important than reel. The SV spools are really nice but to me the rod is just as important. Neither will over come poor technique though.

I started using a SLX70DC last year ($200 on ebay from Japan) and haven't looked back. Before that believe it or not the best skipping reel I had was a 13 Concept Z, the one with bushings instead of bearings. It was loud as hell but I could skip with it better than Curados or Chronarchs. I can skip decently with any of my baitcasters but the DC makes it pretty much foolproof.
