    7' St Croix panfish rod with a 1000 Shimano Sedona and 4 or 6lb Pline or Suffix. Leave the little 5'6" or 6' rods for the kiddos. You need to be able to make good long accurate casts with a 1/16oz jighead (sometimes smaller) and the extra rod length with a little tip action helps a lot.

    For panfish or bass? I'm assuming panfish based on where you posted the question. Crappies in deep lakes or bluegills in shallow water?

    For the money here is a solid setup

    Rod = 13 Fishing 7ft Defy Silver 1 pc
    Reel = Piscifun carbon x 1000

    Wired2Fish guys use this Rod a lot for crappie.

    How will you be using the rod? Dock shooting,, OK I see your point. Other than that Id say for plastics you would be better off with a 7' fast action Light action rod. Great for 1/16 thru 1/4oz jigs. Dobyns 701 or StCriox light action is perfect. Ultra lites you wont be able to set the hook on a long cast as well as the light action. Lightest action rod Id suggest is the old G Loomis 782 rod, and thats a 6.6" moderate action fast tip. great for 1/32- 1/16oz jigs. if you can find one.
