    Blown head gasket 89 black max

    This is probably a stupid question but has anyone ever honed a cylinder without pulling the motor down to block? After finding that low compression in cyl. 5 was due to a blown head gasket I found some glazing in the cylinder I assume from the oil mixing with water. I wanted to try to just pull that piston out and try to hone that cylinder and just keep everything as clean as possible and replace the rings. I wanted to avoid tearing it down because I’ll end up dumping more money than probably what the motor is worth on a rebuild. I appreciate any help or insults!

    are we still talking about the chrome bore 175 as in earlier post of yours , any cyl damage must be resleeved , pics of cly in question ????

    seen it done on horizontal reed mtrs , rod cap removal mabe problem , honning grit would be really hard to wash out ,that cyl looks like its been sleeved and piston replaced , i wouldnt do it personally , report back with findings/sucess

    You should be fine doing that if it's not a chrome bore. I've done it before in a pinch, jammed the ports full of towels and cleaned and cleaned after. That cylinder never had a problem and looked great after quite a few hours of use before I got rid of it.

    In general, grit and debris are the biggest concern. Not something I like doing, but it can be done if you're really careful.
