    Repower

    I'm looking to repower my 1989 20ft champion with a new 200.
I have a jack plate. There's a 142lbs difference between my old motor and a new one. Anyone done this? Forsee any problems?

I don't have an answer to your specific questions but have you settled on a particular motor ? Have you looked into maybe a 225 or 250 ? Just asking because a 20' rig might behave better with more ponies.

The 201 loves ponies! The more the better...

I would think the amount of setback on your jackplate is way more important than an additional 150 pounds. I don't believe that little amount of extra weight would have much affect on overall performance. OTOH, too much setback will kill that rig. Too little is not that big a deal. In fact, some 201s run better without a jackplate.

I bought a 87 201 with 250 merc xs and 6" jack plate 3 blade fury mid 70's boat has pitching deck so nose was a little heavy hole shot was not greatest I think 4 blade would have been better as long as you transom is good it will take it no problem

A 200 is way to small for that boat, I would get a 250.

    I ran mid 60's T load with a 200 on my 89 201.

No doubt a much lighter 200 that what is avaible today. A 20' boat should be able to to 70+ so a 250 is needed.

LOL. Did you just make that up?

Most 201's were rated any V6. From what I remember, they came from the factory with a choice of a 200 or 225 in 1994.

That was then, this is now, many tournaments had a 150 HP limit on boats back then.

When I ordered mine I was fishing B.A.S.S. federation and it had a 150 HP limit, the absolute best I could get as very low 50's. The next year they raised the limit to 200 HP. I moved to SC in 1991 and lived with the 150. As luck would have it I found a 2000 MY 200 that had never been installed at one of the dealerships I got parts from. They had gotten it for one of their "Team" guys and he decided he was going with a different brand and motor combo. But unlucky for me they had already registered it with OMC for warranty and I couldn't get warranty coverage, I didn't need it but would have been nice. The 200 weighed 450 # and it was nice not to get out run for a change. That was a sweet motor. I sold it when I found a lightly used 225 HO and it is a 70-72 MPH boat. The motor weighs the same as the 200 but it is an HO so it is pushing close to 247 HP. An Evinrude 225 HO DI engine weighs 498# so the weight difference is negligible. As long as I can get a 2 stroke it will be on the back of any boat I own.

That is a tremendous amount of extra weight at the very back. For instance when my live well is full, my hole shot is affected. 280lbs of water sitting behind the seats hurt. Tread slowly and see if there is anyone with the same set up out there as you are about to set up. Expensive mistake to make. Try other forums if you haven't found your answer here. Don't rush into it.

That’s just not a problem at all.

As long as your transom is healthy put whatever you want back there. Just don’t go crazy with your setback. The sweet spot on most 201s is gonna be 6-8 inches.

My G2 is 560 pounds. Pretty sure that is more than the 200 you want to use.
