    New to Honda Outboards

I purchased a Charger in early November that has a Honda 225, just in time for my work life to go crazy so it's just sitting there, teasing me. Over on the Mercury thread (previous motor, nothing but problems, pretty sure it was a lemon) the moderator says to use "nothing but Mercury OEM components" for maintenance. I'm finally able to start the maintenance upgrades you would normally make with a used boat(water pump impeller, LU oil, engine oil and filter, etc) and I noticed that the oil filter is Mercury brand. Is this what everyone else uses or do you stick with Honda stuff. Also, anything I should be looking out for regarding the motor? It seems to be in great shape but I don't know what I don't know about Honda stuff.

    Thanks

Personally I use honda oem water pump impeller, Lower unit oil and motor oil is Amsoil. Fluid is your choice. I have try honda, quick silver, and now amsoil. Filter is mobil 1 motor oil. I would run the boat and enjoy and do your yearly maintains.

Go with a HONDA oil filter, buy online and save money and have it delivered to your door. as for fluid, If it has over 100Hours go synthetics, lower unit I used Mercury racing fluids with lucas gear oil mixed. But going with Honda oil and stuff isnt going to cost much more. For the impeller, go ahead and order the kit with everything, only use what needs replacing and put the rest on the shelf for later so you have it on hand and next time just get the impeller and o rings.

Hickory - I just bought a saltwater boat with a Honda BF130. Any suggestions on where to get the Honda parts online? Been searching.

I have a 12 250 I literally do a oil change (Honda oil and filter)and drive it .It’s never once gave us a problem since new .It’s on my 28 foot tri toon and will start and run like a car motor.I add sea foam to ever other tank and do nothing else .It’s been super reliable.

I buy my Honda stuff on line ( closest dealer is 100 miles) I bought 2 gallons of Honda oil on line shipped from Fl. And was still cheaper. I bought all the fuel filters on line a lot cheaper, same way with the oil filter ( get the right one) LU lube AMSOIL ( worked for 18 years in my 225VMax with out a problem). Next year I will buy an OEM water pump. Few more years when it is out of warranty, if I still own it, AMSOIL OIL instead of the Honda oil

Thanks for all the responses. My work life has been crazy since I purchased the boat. I am going to take a couple of weeks off after the first of the year to get everything addressed. Looking forward to getting it out!
