    Battery question

I have a RT188 Ranger (alum) w/ 80 lb Ultrex. Just purchased 3 Group 34 AGM Duracell's. 1 for cranking, 2 for Ultrex. Got them home and realized they were smaller than what I had Group 27's. Guess I was under the impression the bigger the number the bigger the battery. Anyway, being an aluminum boat I believe the batteries should run the ultrex all day. Anyone have any experience with these?

Have a good one and thank God for it!

Northstar makes a group 34. It's actually about the same specs as their group 24 but it's shorter (not as tall) to fit in tight spaces.

Maximum current draw shown for the Ultrex is 56 amps.

The battery has a 20 hour rate of 55 amps.

I don't see the batteries as being unable to satisfy your needs.

Those groups 34 batteries for your Ultrex have a RC of only 120 minutes at 25 amps. IMO, way too small for running a trolling motor even on an aluminum boat. RC should be up closer to 200 minutes. Even if they do last you, they will be more deeply charged with each use than with a larger capacity battery like the 27's, which, will shorten their life span. I would take them back and get the 27 AGM's

Assuming it’s rated 55Ah at the 20 hour rate, that’s really not very good. The 20 hour rate is a low draw rate, and a higher draw like 56A results in a lower AH rating. The battery would last less than an hour supplying 56A, though in reality you won’t be drawing that much.

Let us know when you get back with 31's. B T W they cost quite a bit more.

Thanks for all the input. Guess I'll go back to the Group 27 size that were in it. Would the Group 34 be ok for cranking and accessories?

Depends on your outboard, but it is the smallest marine battery made. Many people still have trouble with 29/31 batteries that are 3 sizes bigger. YMMV.
