    518 ranger

Can turn my 25 tempest at 5400 showing 68 on gps by myself. 200 optimax at 3.5 ptp. Tried higher just a bigger rooster tail. Should I try a 25 or a23 tempest. What about a different prop. Thx

Verify that the tach is accurate first. Then if 5400 is the true rpm drop down to the 23 and see how she runs.

It is. I hooked up a inductive tack. Actually my tach is showing 5200 when the portable tach is showing 5425

If the tach is correct you've get 7% slip which is really really good. Dropping a pitch will get you closer to 6k which will increase hole shot but won't necessarily get you more top end. When you raise the motor above 3.5 how far up are you trimming? Not trying to insult your intelligence or your ability to drive the boat but a common misconception I see is that guys believe throttle full and full trim equals full speed which is not always the case. For example, my rig's sweet spot is 5/8 to 3/4 trim. When you had the motor raised higher than 3.5 were you trimming it out fully? It seems like you've got a really good set up going on and just needs that final little tweak to get everything she's got.

Yep it’s close. At higher plate settings tried full trim and different settings not much difference in speed or rpm only nor rooster tail and steering torque. Feels a lot better lower. My question is their a better prop to try. 5400 does not bother me. Hole shot is ok. Ran trophies on other rigs. Most people on the web are running tempest on 518s. What about a croxton razor or get the tempest b&b by mark. I hear scorpions run well. What do y’all think

Reach out to mark and see what he's recommending. He'll be able to work that tempest to get you that last little bit.

Don't know what year 518 you have, but my 2014 C model at 3.25 ptp ran about 67 - 68.
When I raised it to 2.875 I got 72 and climbing when I ran out of lake.
This is on a 24 Tempest Plus

I had the same boat/motor combo. The 25 Tempest is a very nice “overall” prop. A 23” wheel will be a rocket out of the hole, but it will hit the wall really quick. If you’re looking to ring the last mph out of it, a Yamaha 25m prop will do it. They’ll spline right up it will wake it up a bit.

If your turning 5400 now a 23 will put you on the limiter and shut your motor down when it over revs. If your tach is showing 5200 when it's actually turning 5425 try a 24" Tempest plus.

Which hull do you have? That will help narrow it down.

I had a 14 518c that I ran a 24 tempest at 3" and 25 fury 4 at 2.5". Both would turn 5700-5750 in 50-60 degree weather with 2 and ahlf tank at 67-68. Only ran the boat solo a few times but I had full fuel and livewells and ran about the same.

Alot of people run 24 fury 3s on the C hulls just fine so I'd think you should be able to turn a bit more rpm with your tempest than you are.
