Lower unit oil change, 1999 Johnson 150 J150PLEES

Hey everyone, this is a very silly question, but I am going to change the gear lube on the lower unit on my new to me 1999 Johnson 150 (J150PLEES) this weekend. I have done research on how to do it, etc.

I am planning to use quicksilver 90 gear lube to replace the old oil. Will this suffice? I know some people use synthetic, but don't know enough about changing lower unit oil to go that route yet, unless someone can confirm this should be fine and recommend a product?

This next question is quite silly, but I want to make sure i'm doing it correctly. I plan to also change the gaskets on the drain plug screws when I do this, but don't feel like spending $8 for one OEM gasket. Does anyone have recommendations for aftermarket options or should I just purchase some from amazon or elsewhere?

Thank you in advance, any advice/input is appreciated.

A #311598 drain plug gasket is a little over a buck, not $8 as you mentioned.

I would recommend the Evinrude HPF Pro gear oil as your first choice. If you are dead set on the Mercury gear oil, be sure it is NOT the Premium Gear Lube but the Hi Performance Gear Lube as the Premium is only recommended for 75hp and smaller outboards.

Also try this TIP! A picture shows all ... see attached. BEFORE draining out all of the old oil, clean/wipe the lower leg and add a strip of blue painters or other tape behind the oil drain screw. This allows the old oil to follow the tape edge out and drip/drain STRAIGHT down into your collection bucket. No mess!

I use amsoil 75/90 marine gear lube in mine.
    J225HPLEEN. HO
Made world of difference in how smooth goes into gear.
And if yours is like mine it takes. A quart plus some from another quart to fill.
So 4 quart Amsoil I get 3 oil changes.

Seahorse, Is this gallon of HPF lube the same oil I have been getting in the $30+ quart bottle?
