By chance anyone heard the rumor that Merc Racing may be ending production on the 300/250R motors? mainly due to EPA rules/restrictions on emissions.. Again, maybe just a rumor..

The contorted skegs on the sport masters are so soft if you hit a blade of grass you'll bend it. They don't sell the cases empty yet and a new one is 9K I've just bent up my 3rd on at lake erie last week. The 2.5 and 3.0 litr cases were much stronger. I never tore any of those up like these.

I have the same experience. I find myself straightening the leading edge after hitting anything bigger than a popsicle stick. Also hate the paint. Much easier to deal with small distortions on unpainted like the old style.

Mine are beyond straighten out safely. In defense the second one was a very hard hit with something on the ohio river. Bent prop shaft and broke drive shaft. The first one was just a bump. In open water and this one was also very light but still bent and cracked pretty bad.

The v8 pro XS skegs get knocked off on stumps down here all the time too. And I'm talking about at idle speeds.

Happened to mine also barely felt anything and didn’t think anything about it until I was strapping it down and noticed half my skeg was gone.

Mercury says there made from the same alloy but I sure don't see it. I'm not beating on Mercury, I've ran them for years and never would have owned anything else up to this point. These things are ridiculous, and very expensive to replace.

The (skegs) are not what they use to be in terms of durability.

Is there any way to make them more Durable? Skeg guard?

Skeg guards don't fit on the contorted skegs of the sportmaster lowers they have some funny bends in them from the factory.
