    Jig Hook Rust!

I recently went through a Plano 3600 jig box from the rear box on my kayak and saw about 15-20 jigs that were rusted- some slightly, and some very bad! I'm in the process of salvaging those that aren't too bad with a CLR bath and light sanding and sharpening and transfer to an Plano Edge box but I wanted to make sure this doesn't happen again. I ordered a bag of 100 small desiccant packets from Amazon that are supposed to be "rechargeable" in a microwave, but I wondered if anyone else tried throwing several of these packets into their boxes to absorb the moisture? What can I put on the hooks to help them be protected- a coating or such that doesn't deteriorate the skirts. I think I'll lose about a third of the rusted jigs due to their points being rusted away, but I was able to get some "sticky sharp" with a good fine grain hook file.

I get the z rust storage boxes. Still deal with it a bit. Biggest thing I have started doing is letting stuff dry before putting back into boxes

Most cases they are in with salty baits... That is a no-no.

Especially if they are Zoom's Trailer. Zoom uses a lot of salt in their lures.

store them in the house if you can. Garages can get real humid.....you can leave a light coating of WD-40 on them too....

I remove trailers when I set them out to dry after each outing as well, and I remove them when I put rods away

Those desiccant packs work good for me but i make sure there’s no plastic w/salt mixed in with any jigs/terminal tackle
i’ll go as far as to rinse them off if there was a trailer on a hook then let em dry before storage..
I’ve burnt up a lot of terminal tackle in my younger years that way

If I get caught in the rain, when I get home, I always open all my tackle boxes and let them dry out good

They still rust when stored with salty baits/trailers.

Once they reach a certain amount of rust they are FUBAR. Even if you remove the rust, oftentimes the hook is pitted and will be much weaker and will snap on a hookset. Ask me how I know! lol

I've had some success by soaking in brake parts cleaner. After about an hour I use sand paper and a small file. Won't restore to perfection but will be usable. I sharpen the hooks once the hooks are cleaned up. As stated above keep hooks dry and do not leave salted baits on hooks.

I let all my stuff dry out before I put it away. Those waterproof boxes are the worst ya they keep water out but they keep water in. Just let the lids stay open on the container and sit out of where ever you keep it. I’ve learned that lesson when my flies rusted out.

If fish in saltwater doesnt hurt to rinse then dry.

You can also buy z rust strips to put in the box. These are in everyone of my 3700's. Plus take the trailers off before storing.

BINGO. Salty trailers and some skirts seem to accelerate the rusting.

For what it's worth... my wife gets me the little plastic, round silica packets from unused medicine bottles at her work.

I throw those in my boxes, and they help. The key is to never putting anything in to storage with a soft plastic still attached. Anything that has salt and such will always cause corrosion. Besides just making sure to remove the trailer, also make sure to wipe the hook clean.
