    Towing with Chevy Colorado

Hey y’all going to look at a 2018 Chevy Colorado z71 tomorrow, I’ve been going back and fourth between a half ton or mid size truck for my next vehicle and while I’m open to either I recently found a Colorado I really like in my price range. Currently I’m towing a 16foot tracker with a ford escape, I’m looking to upgrade my vehicle first and boat next, ideally I would like a 17-19foot glass boat, but with that being said if I decide to hold on to this truck for many years (which is likely) would you think it’s capable of towing a 21 footer full rigged long distances? The reason I bought my current boat was due to to towing limitations, and I realize now that was a big mistake, I’d hate to do the same thing again. Btw truck is rated for 7000lbs towing capacity.

You should be fine. The size boat you're talking about isn't going to approach the 7,000 lb. limit. Just make sure the Chevy has the towing package.

It will be fine stopping and pulling. Just make sure it is properly equipped and not just a hitch and light plug either.

80% rule still leaves you at 5600 pounds. If towing a 21 footer you'll be right there, follow safe towing rules and you'll be fine.

I towed my 3600 lb Lowe deep v with a 2018 Colorado 2.8L Duramax without any issues. It did also well with my 4600 lb Skeeter MX1825 but passing was an issue. The V6 Colorado should be fine, just don't expect stellar fuel mileage. Verify your trailer tongue weight when going up in length. My 18' Skeeter was pushing the limit with the Colorado.

You will be fine. I tow with a v6 Dodge Durango and have had no issues pulling or stopping. The Colorado has an 800lb capacity advantage over the Durango.

I tow the boat in my signature with the Colorado in my signature. My highway MPG is 26 but it drops to 15 when towing my boat. No problems at all but the MPG’s. I also have a 7,000 towing capacity.

80% rule just a general rule of thumb. Stay within 80% of towing capacity to maintain optimal towing and stopping. It gives room for some leeway for unknowns like fuel, cargo inside the vehicle, passengers etc.

Ah, I see. We always went with 100% if it was rated at 10k it should be good for 20k!! CJ

I tow my 18ft Ranger with an 18 colly. Its also a Z71 4x4 with the shortbox. It has the tow package and i have no issues. When i tow the boat i put it in manual 7. Tows great up to 70mph. I won't go over 70 pulling the boat. 8th gear is to low. I also installed the Boost side view mirrors. Screenshot_20211203-212849_Gallery.jpg

You should be good towing it Colorado.
Like others have said it should have complete tow package.

    I pull my 99 TR-21 with a 2019 Nissan Frontier Pro 4x.
Compared to the Titan that I had before the Frontier--- I can tell it's back there, as with the Titan I would forget it was back there.
I would catch a glimpse of the boat in my peripheral vision in the mirror and think "why is he on my ass".....then realize it was the boat and laugh at myself.
Having surge brakes help a lot with the stopping.
Can it pull is a good question...........but a better question is will it stop it.
